This evening's conference tournament games have resulted in numerous losses across the board, and we have even had some very significant upsets. 13 people in our pool have at least 1 loss, with 5 of those 13 having 2 losses. No one has hit the 3 loss mark yet, that would be depressing. The standings are updated here for those that want to jump right into the results, but don't forget to come back and read the highlights. I'll spend some time below running through pool impacting results by each conference.
Patriot League
Starting in the Patriot League, since they were the first to wrap up, we had some major upsets in 2 of the 4 games. In a game that was not an upset, (1) Colgate beat (8) Loyola Maryland by 25+ points and will move on to the semifinals. In a couple shocking losses (3) Lehigh was defeated by (6) Lafayette, giving Tammy her 2nd loss of the day and (2) Navy was beat by (7) American causing 3 people to take a loss. The only other game in the Patriot League was a thrilling (4) Army win in OT vs. (5) Boston University, but this had no impact to our pool.
Atlantic Sun
The Atlantic Sun was the next conference to finish and while the games were exciting, chalk ended up prevailing somewhat easily. (1) Kennesaw State led wire to wire against (5) Lipscomb and while the game was within 3 points late, Kennesaw State was never in any real danger of losing. On the other side of the bracket (2) Liberty was down big against (3) Eastern Kentucky but ended up coming back in the 2nd half and won easily. We now have our first conference championship matchup set for Sunday: (1) Kennesaw State vs. (2) Liberty.
Horizon League
In the Horizon League it was all chalk that won, however we still handed out a few pool losses as this is a conference that we were spread across many teams trying to pick up a bonus point win. (2) Milwaukee crushed (7) Wright State which gave Sam I Am his 2nd loss and (1) Youngstown pulled away very late to beat (8) Detroit, giving PGilly his 2nd loss. Everyone else survived, for now!
Ohio Valley
Our final conference worth covering tonight is the Ohio Valley and a few losses were handed out here tonight. In the first game of the evening (5) Southeast Missouri State beat (4) Tennessee State, handing out losses to Brads Lads, Jack, and Sam I Am. In the late game, which contained 3 ejections for throwing punches, fans getting arrested and UT Martin down to 0 bench players, (3) UT Martin had a miraculous comeback to beat (6) SIUE in the oddest conference tournament game to date. Click this link if you want to watch the video of a SIUE sucker punch to a UT Martin player.
For those of you that have 1-2 losses I can assure you that you don't have anything to worry about. We still have a long way to go and none of the losses so far have been devastating. For 13 years I have watched people in this pool go from last to first and first to last. I'll be sure to call out someone when they are toast. I am exhausted from watching basketball all day and Friday looks to be a repeat of today, which is making me tired just thinking about it. I will try my best to get a blog entry out before all the action starts at 11:00 AM CST, it's starting to become a lot to keep up with! 😂
