We are in the home stretch and less than 1 week away from Selection Sunday. A full slate of action starts today at 5:00 PM CST. As usual, I'll attempt to hit the highlights, cover pool impacting games and normally review the current standings, but no change since last night's update. The next few days are critical for this pool, if you rack up too many losses without winning any conference tournaments, you'll find yourself mathematically eliminated very quickly.
We'll start with the most important games of the evening, our conference tournament championship games in the Southern Conference and Sun Belt. Both championships will tip off at 6:00 PM CST, it's unfortunate that both games are on at the same time but that is why we have multiple devices. 📺
Going in alphabetical order, in the Southern Conference our matchup will be the surprising (7) Chattanooga against the favorite (1) Furman. 43% of our pool picks are on Furman, the analytics gave Furman a 45% chance to win the conference tournament championship before it started, and they are favored tonight by 5 points. What could possibly go wrong for Furman tonight? 😎
In the Sun Belt championship game, we have another low seed in (8) South Alabama taking on (2) Louisiana-Lafayette. The pre-tournament favorite, Marshall, was eliminated and we only have 3 people on Louisiana. Not surprisingly, nobody is on South Alabama. The line in this game is super interesting as Louisiana is only a 1-point favorite and the announcers have been talking up South Alabama all tournament. We may potentially see 2 champions tonight that were not picked in our pool. 😲
In other conference tournament action we'll have the Colonial Conference, Horizon League, Summit League and West Coast Conference playing semifinals games. We're at the point in these conferences where every matchup means that someone in our pool is going to take a loss. The Big Sky and Southland will be playing quarterfinals games and that wraps up the action for the day, no new conferences tip off Monday. 🏀
The next blog entry will come late Monday evening and will include updated standings from tonight's conference tournament championship games. The West Coast Conference games are scheduled to end well after midnight CST which means I'll have to submit the blog entry and standings without one or both of those games, but I'll catch up on any important updates in the morning. Enjoy another day of buzzer beaters, upsets, and fun basketball!
